What kind of popcorn should I buy?

1. You’ll want to buy your corn in bulk to keep expenses down. We recommend 50-pound bags. 2. There are basically two types of popcorn. Mushroom style and butterfly style. We recommend if at all possible buying mushroom style popcorn, mushroom style popcorn is hardier popcorn that blows up big and round it will also increase profitability because there's less waste. This Popcorn is by far the best BKH Popcorn. It is now available through the snack division of ConAgra Foods and distributed by the J.M. Swank Company. Call Erin Conklin of J.M. Swank at 800-593-6375, ext. 5979, or e-mail Erin.Conklin@ConAgraFoods.com

How do I find a popcorn supplier?

Another Good Popcorn is  Weaver Popcorn .& Monster Mushroom popcorn by Gold Medal. Call 800-543-0862 to find a local Gold Medal dealer.

Most of the time you can Google popcorn supplier in a local supply company will pop up. If this doesn't work contact your local movie theater and ask them where they get their popcorn.

What kind of oil should I use?

We highly recommend using corn oil. Sometimes it's a little harder to find in bulk (35lb jugs) but is well worth it. Corn oil will give a nice buttery flavor that with the sugar and salt makes it yummy.

I've seen other people use soybean oil. Should I use this?

If your competition is using soybean oil or any other type of canola type oil this is perfect for you. By using corn oil your kettle corn will be the best tasting kettle corn you've ever tasted. We guarantee it

Where do I find corn oil?

Corn oil can be found at Sam's club, Wal-Mart, cash and carry, Smart and final, or any other restaurant type supply store.

What kind of sugar?

We recommend cane sugar if you can find Baker's sugar this works a little bit better and breaks down quicker and oil

What kind of salt?

Regular salt is best. Do not use popcorn salt it's too fine and has a tendency to over salt

Where do I find popcorn bags?

Well, we've been working with poly bag in Tacoma Washington for 10 years or a fantastically run bag company that can supply all of your kettle corn bagging needs. Call them at 253-473-4661.the bags we use say hand pop kettle corn on them and look really professional. Remember people are advertising your booth with this bag. Make sure your bag is professional.

What size bags should I buy?

to start out we recommend one large box, two medium boxes, and one small.

Medium bags will typically outsell large and small 2 to 1 call Poly bag 253-473-4660

How much should I charge?

Small bags people typically charge $3-$3.50 medium bags $4-$5 large bags $7 to $8

How do I figure out how much supplies I need?

Here's what I do. Let's say the event that you're going to has an average of 10,000 people at. I figure I will sell a minimum of 2% of the public. 10,000x2% equals 200 medium size bags.

To produce 100 medium size bags you will need one 50-pound bag of corn, one 25-pound bag of sugar, and 3 1/2 gallons of oil. This will produce around 100 to 115 medium size 8.5 x 18 bags.

So if I'm going to sell a minimum of 200 medium size bags I will need 2 - 50 pound bags of corn 2 25 pound bags of sugar and 7 gallons of oil.

Make sure you always carry one extra bag of corn one extra bag of sugar and one extra jug of oil. You never know when you might need it.

How much propane should I use?

5-gallon propane tank will pop 3-50 pound bags of corn

What kind of Tent should I buy?

A little 10x10 tent that we're using right now come from Costco it's made by King canopy it's an all aluminum frame with a white top

The thing that will really will set you apart is your banners make sure you get good banners the size of banners that we recommend is 3' x 9' also any sort of sandwich board signs that you can put in the front of the festival is highly recommended people will walk to find you if they know you're there. Also decorate your tent with balloons and other eye-catching stuff

What should I wear?

The popper should always where a long sleeve shirt, gloves, face mask or protective goggles and some really comfortable shoes.. We would recommend having some shirts made that have your logo or name on the back of it. This looks really nice. Also make sure you're wearing aprons we recommend black or red.

Sifting and cooling do I need it?

If you haven't purchased a sifting and cooling table yet we would highly recommend this. Being able to stand up right and bag kettle corn is a huge relief for most of the baggers this also produces a highly desirable bag without old maids. The sifting and cooling table was the first product we designed after doing a large air show. We will never go without it again

Why aluminum? Lightweight, great looking never rusts, hold the heat longer (It does not get hotter it simply holds the heat longer) very strong, easy to clean.   Just use a pressure washer, some cleaner and your set – Our solid Aluminum frame is extremely strong.   If aluminum wasn’t a great product to use in high heat situations than why do they make Formula 1 Engines out of it? They don’t make BBQ's out of Aluminum because it would cost a fortune.. Aluminum is Twice the cost of Steel in everyway...  We invented the Sifting and Cooling table, the Full Kitchen & The Lemon Shaker Concept. .  It's about producing products that last.   Ask your self this question.. How’s that powder coated BBQ you bought 2 years ago holding up? Peeling rusted? I just threw ours in the trash, it was completely rusted out, welcome to cooking with powder-coated steel we did it for 8 years. Aluminum is completely safe to use, if it wasn’t they wouldn’t make pots and pans out of it! Aluminum is great for cooking; it heats up faster and holds heat longer. This is perfect for an oven style Popper. Remember Our Bowl is Stainless Steel

Great Ideas And Tips Thanks Judy

Hi Greg:  Well we did it.  We went to two Farmer's Markets this last weekend.  It went better than we expected.  We were nervous because it was our first time and we knew the inspector was coming also.  But...good news...it was so easy and we had a ball.  There were two markets, one Friday evening and one Saturday morning.  We were very tired but very pleased and no more nerves.
Because we went in on a shoestring I am sending you some pictures of our do-it-yourself features.  In our area we are in-between 4 sink requirements. We needed one hand wash sink with "hands free" warm running water.  So we found a little plastic sink online and cut a hole in a regular 6' table. The waste water drains down into a bucket through tubing.  Since it had to be warm we and hands free we found a 5 gallon insulated container.  The problem was we could only find one large thermos and it had a push button faucet. Since it needed to be hands free Richard replaced the faucet with a new handle and fittings.  The other three sinks only had to be 5 gallon buckets which contained soap water, rinse water, and bleach disinfectant water.  Easy enough.  We filled them at home...held the tops on with bungi cords and they were there when the inspector came: never used them but they were there.  Ta-da....perfect.  Then we were concerned about the wind here so we needed to be able to hold the tent in place.  We decided on four small buckets of cement and pvc pipe.  (I think that is what it is called).   We got an easy up tent from Costco and painted our name on all four sides. We actually had customers tell us they saw kettle korn while driving past and came in just for it.   It worked perfect.  We did not want to use the plastic tent walls that came with the tent as it is so hot here so we found some netting walls and we were ready to go.  Regulations here are all four walls...totally enclosed.   I am not sure if they are really strict with the kettle korn booth but we were told that we had to follow the same food code that others food vendors had to follow.
Oh I was going nuts because we kept getting quotes from insurance agents ranging from $1,500 to $1000 per year.  Yiks....  We finally called Timothy Bildsoe at Wells Fargo Bank  1-(866) 647-6199 and got $1,000,000 Liability insurance for only $250.00.  (Tim said I could give you his information in case you wanted to pass it along.  He was great to work with.)  We decided we did not need property insurance.
That's about it.  We are ready for next weekend and we are waiting for a couple large events we have already gotten into.  Oh, thanks so much for the information in your kettle korn book regarding the non-profit organizations and how to deal with them.  We have already used it and would never have thought of it had I not read about it.
Thanks again for being so wonderful to work with Greg.  I know I called you way too many times but you were great each time I called and so willing to help no matter what I needed.

Keep looking up - you can bet someone will be looking back.
